Digitalization in your healthcare journey
The healthcare sector will face a huge digital journey in the coming years. There are many topics going on which will come to a final solution in 2 years’ time. To name a few: Open Healthcare with FHIR, Patient onboarding with CIAM, Remote counseling, Consent Management.

In previous vlogs we spoke about trends, agility, and time-to-market, what is your experience and vision around these topics specific in the healthcare sector?

The healthcare sector will face a huge digital journey in the coming years. There are many topics going on which will come to a final solution in 2 years’ time. To name a few: Open Healthcare with FHIR, Patient onboarding with CIAM, Remote counseling, Consent Management.

Explain what is Open Healthcare and what does it mean for the healthcare sector?

Basically, it drills down to a simple thing: Exchange patient, medical and insurance information between hospitals, insurance companies and the government. However, to do so there is a set of regulations, standards, guidelines, and policies which each organization must apply. This is already enforced by law in the United States, and Europe will follow shortly.

Sounds like a huge impact for the complete healthcare sector, can you explain what the impact is for hospitals?

The impact for instance on a hospital is quite huge. Each hospital within an EU country needs to enable API’s and related Services based on the FHIR standard all the way back to their EHR-system. Besides they must implement Consent Management whereby Patients are in control which data will be exchanged with which 3rd party. So, the question for each hospital is: how you combine your old legacy application with a new API’s FHIR enabled. And the answer is quite simple, utilize an Integration Platform as a Service which can address that out of the box.

What can you recommend hospitals who are dealing with this new open healthcare and FHIR movement?

Based on our experience and other customers I know one thing for sure: Focus on your primary business and do not loose time and budget on the integration solution itself. I recommend hospitals to choose a Platform-as-a-Service like Connext whereby you get a set of FHIR enabled API’s and Services which you can map directly to your EHR-system out-of-the-box. Saves a lot of time and budget.
