The key element for success in Digital Transformation is the level of agility or flexibility a company can handle.
How does that reflect on IT?
Most of the companies and customers we have worked with in the past years regarding the Digital Transformation, focused on a few key principles: API-first, Cloud-first and Open Source-first. With these key principles they were able to become an extremely agile company.
Why these key principles made them agile?
With an API-first approach you can detach the outside world with the inside IT implementation. So, the business can continue while the IT systems are adjusted. With a Cloud-first approach you benefit from the unlimited power of a native cloud infrastructure which in my believe cannot be beaten with an on-premises infrastructure anymore in terms of budget. It is simply cheaper. At last, but not least, with an OpenSource-first approach companies do not have to invest in software licenses, only in subscriptions for the support. That all together makes already a first step in becoming agile.
Do you have a last tip on how companies can start with such an agile approach?
The customers and organizations I worked with choose not to invest time and money in figuring it out all by themselves. Instead, they choose for a Platform-as-a-Service concept, whereby all the hard work on infrastructure and middleware level is done for them as easy as electricity form the wall plug. So, my tip: focus on your core business and data, utilize an iPaaS solution to get started.
