Background
Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG, based in Lauterach, Austria, is a globally operative full-service logistics provider with about 8,000 employees at 180 company-owned locations. In the last fiscal year (2021), it posted annual sales of 2.5 billion euros. Its portfolio encompasses transport and logistics solutions, digital services, and supply chain management. The twin strengths of digital and physical competence enable Gebrüder Weiss to respond swiftly and flexibly to customers’ needs.
The family-run organization – with a history going back more than half a millennium – has implemented a wide variety of environmental, economic, and social initiatives. Today, it is also considered a pioneer in sustainable business practices.
The challenge
The roots of Gebrüder Weiss can be traced back more than 500 years, making the logistics company the oldest transport company in the world. The company’s history begins in the late Middle Ages with a transalpine courier line to northern Italy (Milan). A lot has changed in the transportation industry since then. We’re not talking only about transportation methods but also about expectations from customers. People do not only expect to receive their packages within days, but they also expect to know exactly when their purchase will arrive.
Transport companies need to go through a digital transformation to stay competitive. Otherwise, they will not be able to cater to their customers’ changing wants and needs. Gebrüder Weiss was proactively pursuing this transformation since the beginning of the digital age. After managing their own WSO2 products for a couple of years, they decided to focus on the provided functionality on the platform instead of operating the platform.
“We started with servers on-prem, but we quickly realised that we want to find an easier way of operating WSO2 products.”
