Schiphol-Rijk, The Netherlands, November 22, 2016 – René Wiersma, MSc MBA, Enterprise Architect at Yenlo, has won the Best in Business Award 2016 at Nyenrode Business University. Wiersma won this award with the best MBA thesis of the ‘Executive MBA in Business & IT’ in 2016. He researched the possibilities for independent software vendors (ISV’s) to develop an ‘Internet of Things (IoT)’ business model. As a result of his scientific research, he wrote – in collaboration with Yenlo – the book Switch on your IoT. This book can serve as guide for companies that want to start with IoT.

Best in Business Award 2016
Nyenrode Business University yearly rewards the thesis that has the most relevant topic related to organization, actuality, originality, usefullness and elaboration for the business with the Best in Business Award.
Start a succesfull IoT organization
For his thesis Wiersma explored how organizations, ISV’s in particular, can succeed in developing an IoT business model. IoT includes all devices that communicate automatically via the internet with organizations or other devices, like smartphones, Tesla’s or smart thermostats. Wiersma interviewed different experts: ‘When I was looking for the subject for my thesis, Yenlo and I started thinking about developing an organization model for IoT. In the IT market IoT is a trend that is very demanding with regards to integration. We were wondering how we, as IT service provider and integration specialist, could respond to this trend.’ Wiersma found out that organizations struggled on how to create value with IoT. In the book this dilemma will be answered. It is a guide and a start for specialists in integration that look for a business model in which IoT plays an important role.
From research to book
Because of the interest in IoT Wiersma and Yenlo decided to rewrite the thesis to the book Switch on your IoT. The thesis is scientifique, the book is practical with a lot of use cases and best practises. IoT technology, API’s and API management get extensive attention. John Mathon, co-founder of TIBCO and Vice President of Strategy Yenlo, Ruben van der Zwan, CEO and co-founder of Yenlo and Paul Fremantle, co-founder WSO2 and t this time working on his Phd about ‘The Internet of Things’ at the University of Portsmouth have contributed to the book.
