Key takeaways from the WSO2 Integration Summit

Key takeaways from the WSO2 Integration SummitDuring the WSO2 Integration Summit in San Francisco, sponsored by Yenlo as the leading Premier Certified Partner of WSO2, the general vision on integration and the WSO2 product roadmap was presented. It was a great day with about 80 people in the room sharing knowledge and experiences.

Powering an API-driven World

The WSO2 Integration summit was opened by Shevan Goonetilleke, President and Chief Operating Officer at WSO2. He explained in a simple phrase what WSO2 is all about: “Building the technology to connect systems and expose as APIs and secure integrations”. That we are in an API-driven world is highlighted by the fact that 25% to 40% of all internet traffic consist of APIs being consumed by mobile apps and web-based applications.

And some important news: WSO2 Enterprise Integrator 7.0 was released last week. The WSO2 Enterprise Integrator 7.0 now has the WSO2 Stream Processor processes embedded in the product. A huge step forward in product enhancements, especially with the Ballerina language embedded under the hood, and improved support for Kubernetes, and containerization.

Next to the launch of WSO2 Enterprise Integrator 7.0, Shevan Goonetilleke also announced the launch of the WSO2 API Manager 3.0 in the coming weeks. Also, the new WSO2 API Manager more and more relies on the Ballerina language, especially the API Gateway component of the complete API stack. It’s also better enabled for Kubernetes, and containerization.

This fits perfectly in the strategy that Yenlo has been evangelising for years now: an API-first, Cloud-first and Open Source-first strategy. Part of this approach is avoiding lock-ins. Lock-ins in terms of finance, technology and knowledge. That’s why in 2018 Yenlo launched the Connext solution, a 24/7 Managed Private WSO2 Cloud Solution positioned as an Integration-as-a-Service platform. Making use of our WSO2 Cloud Platform frees up resources inside your enterprise, so they can focus on the real matters; your business processes and use-case implementation. Following this strategy makes enterprise agile and ready for an API-driven world.

The Composable Enterprise

Right after Shevan, Dr. Paul Fremantle, CTO and Co-Founder of WSO2 presented his vision regarding the “The Composable Enterprise”. The composable enterprise is an enterprise, which is agile enough to react on a changing market and a changing customer demand. Paul Fremantle: “We cannot change the future; we only must be able to adapt the change”. To do so, the Cellery framework for a micro services approach is the perfect fit to manage, govern and secure your micro services requirements. Cellery is one of WSO2’s answer to the micro services architecture approach whereby all the knowledge and components like the WSO2 Micro Gateway and WSO2 Micro Enterprise Integrator (Micro ESB), next to the WSO2 Identity Server for securing the APIs by industry standards.

Internet Payment Protocols and the API Economy

Miko Matsumura, General Partner, Gumi Ventures spoke about enterprise blockchain, open source, and digital payment platforms. A few interesting assertions came up, such as: “Internet is printing its own Money”, and “Open Source Money, will Eat all Money”. Open Source commoditises and lowers the cost of infrastructure and accelerates innovation. The force behind open source according to Mike is ‘consent’, such as consent to develop, consent to use. So, the most consent creates the most power and value. Open source has a strong peer review process, and good open source scores higher in the consent matrix. Interesting is that proprietary software gets drawn into this and is forced to compete with open source. Critical for success of digital currencies to be used by enterprises is that dollars are being transacted, so it is important to have banks incorporated in the digital currency transactions.

Emerging Architecture Patterns- API-centric & Cell-based

Then Asanka Abeysinghe, deputy CTO at WSO2, discussed the concept of a cell-based architecture which fits in perfectly into a micro services and API driven world. A key point is that for a developer there really is no difference, because after code development objects follow a similar process, after moving an object into a repository, it will then flow via a CI/CD process to a production environment.

Ballerina - Cloud Native Middleware as a Programming Language

As part of the cloud-native and “Code instead of Configure” strategy of WSO2, the new program language Ballerina fits in. Sameera Jayasoma, Senior Director at WSO2 presented the latest version of Ballerina the Cloud-native Middleware as a Programming Language. Ballerina is the first programming language built around APIs. It is all about the start from the concept of building a network program. By using Ballerina, you save a lot of time in writing YAML or Java code, Ballerina will take care of the deployment in a Kubernetes environment, no coding needed anymore!
